Massive new condo development will preserve "Hooker Harvey's"

The Canadian fast food chain outlet at the corner of Gerrard and Jarvis is infamous.

Affectionately referred to by locals as “Hooker Harvey’s“, the burger joint has long held the reputation as the hang-out of choice for sex workers in the area.

While many Toronto landmarks have succumbed to massive redevelopment in recent years, it looks like the single-storey fast food restaurant will be spared.

A preliminary proposal submitted to the City of Toronto wants to see (almost all of) the south-facing block of Gerrard between Mutual Street and Jarvis Street redeveloped into a 10-storey building connected to a 25-storey tower.

If approved, it would add 306 residential units to the area.

While existing heritage buildings on-site are proposed to be shifted and integrated into the proposal, it seems that Hooker Harvey’s will be unaffected.

Its address at 278 Jarvis Street is not among those seeking re-zoning, and plans show that the proposed new complex will, um, wrap around the existing restaurant.
