Police say a driver was seriously injured after their vehicle went airborne and flew over an open shaft in Milton.

The incident took place at the Trafalgar Road Water Feedermain, which is currently under construction.

Police say a vehicle somehow entered the construction zone, went airborne over the 40-foot, 12-metre drop and crashed onto the edge of the other side of the shaft.

The driver currently remains in serious, but stable condition in the hospital.
