Everyone is talking about Sophie Grégoire Trudeau’s recent post on Instagram for International Women’s Day, and not for the reasons you may think.

What initially started as a celebration for women quickly turned into an emotional spitfire from residents across the country.

Are you ready to ignite change? This week, as we mark International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the boys and men in our lives who encourage us to be who we truly are, who treat girls & women with respect, and who aren’t afraid to speak up in front of others. Take a picture holding hands with your male ally & share it on social media using the hashtag #TomorrowInHand. Together, we can create a movement that inspires more men to join the fight to build a better tomorrow with equal rights & opportunities for everyone… because #EqualityMatters.

“This week, as we mark International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the boys and men in our lives who encourage us to be who we truly are, who treat girls & women with respect, and who aren’t afraid to speak up in front of others,” writes Grégoire Trudeau.

“Take a picture holding hands with your male ally & share it on social media using the hashtag #TomorrowInHand.”

While she may have had good intentions posting this, many users were quick to respond on social media expressing their own opinion on the matter.

One user on Instagram, nessamary wrote under the post:

Epic. Fail. SERIOUSLY? On the ONE day dedicated to women we want to remember men???? You need to reconsider your message. This goes completely against what today stands for.

Instagram user jessrossthebaker commented:

I can’t believe you used your position of power to share this message, of all possible messages, on this day.

Another user cgron wrote:

Really? Support international womens day by celebrating boys and men, for…. treating women with respect?!…. This joke is not even funny.

Regardless of the backlash, it appears that Grégoire Trudeau took all the negative comments on her photo with a grain of salt.

“Well, now we’re having a conversation! Thanks to everyone for your feedback and pics! Love it,” she commented a few hours later.
