GTA Walmart to be first Canadian store to close in more than a decade

One of the GTA’s 20 Walmart locations is closing.

Scarborough’s Cedarbrae Mall, near the intersection of Lawrence Avenue East and Markham Road, will be losing its Walmart on January 31, 2019.

According to Walmart, the decision to close the store, located at 3487 Lawrence Avenue East, doesn’t impact any associate jobs.

“Every single associate at this store will be offered comparable positions within the Walmart family,” Anika Malik, Director, Corporate Affairs, Walmart Canada, said in a statement to Daily Hive.

“This decision is not a reflection of this outstanding group of associates who through their hard work and commitment have supported our customers and the community.”

Malik said that the lease for this store was up for renewal which presented an opportunity to review “how we serve our customers in the Scarborough-area.”

This review factored things like the age of the building and concentration of stores.

“We look forward to serving our customers at this location until the end of the year and invite them to visit us at a nearby store in future,” said Malik.

Nearby Walmart Canada locations include Scaborough’s 1900 Eglinton Avenue East, a location at Scarborough Town Centre, and Morningside’s 799 Milner Avenue.

The last Walmart store to close in Canada was over a decade ago.
