Production of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 stopped indefinitely

Less than 24 hours after announcing sales of the Galaxy Note 7 will be stopped, Samsung says they have chosen to halt production entirely.

In a brief statement released Tuesday morning, the company said stopping production is in the the interest of consumers’ safety.

A number of consumers had complained of their Galaxy Note 7s catching on fire due to battery issues, prompting the company to recall the phones and provide replacements in early September.

Now anyone with a Galaxy Note 7 is being asked by Samsung to power down their phones and get a refund.

As of September 1, there had been 35 cases of batteries that overheated and caught fire.

“Since the affected devices can overheat and pose a safety risk, we are asking consumers with an original Galaxy Note7 or a replacement Galaxy Note7 to power it down and contact the carrier or retail outlet where you purchased your Galaxy Note7,” reads a statement by Samsung.

While customers in South Korea have been told they’ll be able to exchange their Galaxy Note 7 for another smartphone, it seems Canadian and US consumers only have the option for a refund.
