After offering free admission to everyone this year as part of Canada 150 celebrations, Parks Canada has announced that starting on January 1, 2018, admission to all of its parks will be free for youth 17 and under.

The announcement was made this week, by federal environment minister Catherine McKenna, along with Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.

“I am very pleased to announce free admission for youth 17 and under to all national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas,” said McKenna. “By encouraging young Canadians to visit these national treasures, we will help inspire the next generation of stewards for Canada’s protected places.”

Trudeau echoed McKenna’s sentiments.

“There is no better way to celebrate families than by enjoying the outdoors and discovering the countless benefits of nature for our health and wellness,” she said. “I invite all youth 17 and under to visit our national parks and national historic sites for free in 2018 and beyond.”

These experiences, she added, “will create memories that will last a lifetime for Canadian youth and their families, as it has done for our family.”

While youth will enjoy free admission beginning in 2018, Parks Canada is returning to fee-based admission for adults as well as seniors, and the 2018 Discovery Pass is now on sale.
