Ottawa residents now have another way to get around, as the Rideau Canal is now open for the winter season thanks to the recent subzero temperatures.

Now in its 48th year, the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink winds its way through the heart of Ottawa, over a total length of 7.8 kilometres, stretching from downtown to Dows Lake.

As of today, ten out of 13 sections of the canal are open for skating.

The National Capital Commission  (NCC) has created an interactive map that shows conditions along the canal’s length and which sections are open and closed.

Besides Ottawans, thousands of visitors head to Ottawa each winter to enjoy this national treasure, which is free of charge. And of course, next month, Winterlude will take place all along the beautiful Skateway.

Getting FOMO yet? Enjoy these photos until that Ottawa road trip!
