Ontario releases 'Sunshine List', revealing the province's public sector salaries for 2016

On Friday, the Government of Ontario released its latest Sunshine List, revealing the salaries of Ontario Public Service and broader public sector employees who were paid $100,000 or more in 2016.

Topping this year’s list is Ontario Power Generation CEO Jeffrey Lyash, who was paid $1,155,899 in 2016.

In second place is University of Toronto’s President and Chief Executive Officer, William Moriarty, who earned $1,045,582.62.

The full list is available online, in a sortable and searchable table, to keep in accordance to Ontario’s commitment to openness and transparency. There are over 100,000 names on the list, all earning over $100,000 last year.

“It is important for our government to be a leader in openness, accountability and transparency. Proactively releasing information on public sector salaries is just one way we are ensuring our government remains accountable to the people of Ontario,” said Liz Sandals, President of the Treasury Board, in a statement. Sandals earned $165,851, according to the list.

Also on the Sunshine List is Premiere Kathleen Wynne who was paid $208,974 last year.

Since 1996, the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act has been making Ontario’s public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. According to the government, “the act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.”
