'First Light' illuminates this historic Ontario town with over 5,000 candles

Returning for its 18th year, Sainte-Marie’s “First Light” is a must-see event this holiday season.

Recognized by Festivals and Events Ontario as one of the province’s “Top 100” Events, “First Light” is going to get you into that holiday ambience with a great line-up of family activities and performers, all amidst the spectacular glow of over 5,000 candles.

The magical experience begins as visitors approach the candlelit historic site, which is located in Midland, Ontario. The candlelight glow illuminates the famous 17th-century mission, as visitors enjoy the sights and entertainment.

As always, there will be delicious baked goods and cookie samples available for tasting, and there will be a historic blacksmithing demonstration.

“First Light” has strong ties to community groups, and many will be involved in this year’s celebration, offering special “hands-on” children’s crafts and historic demonstrations. Event organizers also promise an abundance of music will fill the air, including Native drumming and singing, lively Franco-Ontarian folksongs, and delightful community and school choirs performing seasonal music over the nine evenings.

For those looking to do some early holiday shopping, 20 exceptional artisans will be in the Sainte-Marie museum, and the themed Sainte-Marie gift shop will be open each night.

And to add to the celebrations, there will be fireworks every Thursday.
