McDonald's Canada adding nuts to its menu, will no longer be safe for people with allergies

You can blame the SKOR McFlurry.

The newly introduced menu item at McDonald’s has prompted the fast food giant to issue an allergy notice on its website.

We are now serving products using nuts that are not individually packaged. The new SKOR McFlurry (available Jan 17, 2017) is the first product that will contain non-packaged peanuts or tree nuts. As a result, all products available at our restaurants may contain or come into contact with peanuts, tree nuts or other allergens. That means the possibility exists for cross-contact between nuts and other menu items.

It’s a significant change for Canadians living with allergies. The fast food giant touts its “long history of being sensitive to the needs of our guests with food allergies,” though the new announcement will likely mean that McD’s will now join a long list of no-gos for the allergy-afflicted and their dining companions.
