A mother and her 10-month-old baby were mauled to death by a grizzly bear outside of their remote cabin in Yukon.

According to Yukon RCMP and Yukon Coroner’s Service, Valérie Théorêt, 37, and her baby girl, Adele Roesholt were killed by the animal near Einarson Lake, Northeast of Mayo on November 26.

Authorities learned of the deaths on Monday when Gjermund Roesholt, Théorêt’s husband, said he charged and fatally shot the grizzly bear about 100 metres outside of the family’s cabin.

When Roesholt returned home, he found the lifeless bodies of his wife and daughter inside.

An investigation is being conducted by Mayo RCMP, Environment Yukon, Yukon Coroner’s Service and the RCMP’s Forensic Identification Section.

According to Roesholt, the family had lived in the remote cabin since August and were trapping around the lake.
