Power has been restored to Toronto’s east end following a massive outage on Monday morning but before it all went dark, some Torontonians report seeing explosions streak across the sky.
Breakfast Television host Kevin Frankish recorded this spectacular light show this morning, noting in the caption that, “That’s not lightning you see…those are transformers blowing. All that salt powder from last week + today’s wet snow and melting = power outages.”

Think you are seeing lightening? Guess again, the warm up, combined with wet snow is reacting to salt residue on transformers causing them to pop / explode. The result is massive power outages in GTA.

While the flashes and explosions aren’t exactly reassuring, they’re not all that uncommon either. Transformers popping were recorded during the 2013 ice storm as well.
