Discover Ibn al Tahhan’s masterpiece “A Compendium of a Fatimid Court Musician” with historian George Sawa at the Aga Khan Museum

The Aga Khan Museum invites guests to learn about Ibn al-Tahhan’s “A Compendium of a Fatimid Court Musician,” a fascinating dictionary and biography of music and musicians of the Fatimid era, during an insightful talk from George Sawa.

A historian of medieval Arabic music and a qanun performer, Sawa will guide the audience through the rhythms, melodic modes, instruments, music forms and ornaments of the Fatimids, a remarkable dynasty that influenced knowledge and culture in the 10th and 11th centuries throughout the Mediterranean, Europe and the Near East. Suzanne Meyers Sawa will join him on stage for a unique demonstration using a qanun and various percussion instruments.
