Over 30,000 donors needed by Canadian Blood Services during holiday season
Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is in need of over 30,000 blood donors this holiday season.
CBS says it is predicting a low supply of platelets in the coming weeks. Platelets have a seven-day shelf life and help make blood clot.
Platelets are crucial for cancer treatments and are also used for trauma victims, cardiac surgeries, and organ transplants.
During the holiday season, CBS sees a drop in donations.
“Statutory holidays in December will impact our platelet supply, but blood donors can help ensure they are available by booking and keeping their appointments by Jan. 6,” says Rick Prinzen, Canadian Blood Services’ chief supply chain officer, in a statement.
To obtain platelets, CBS separates them from blood after donation. Platelets can also be separated from whole blood during donation with a process called apheresis.
Those who are unable to donate blood are asked to encourage others in their networks to give on their behalf.
