Apple has officially killed the home button on iPhones (PHOTOS)

Sep 13 2018, 1:41 am

Earlier today, Apple held its annual event in the Steve Jobs Theatre where it announced a bevy of updates and new products.

However, it should be noted that of the three new iPhones introduced – the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR – not one of them included Apple’s signature home button. That’s right, the next generation of iPhones all feature edge-to-edge screens without the familiar circle at the bottom to guide you back to the home screen.

As announced at this morning’s event, 2017’s iPhone X became the single most popular smartphone in the world over the past year, and it never had a home button. So it’s not a complete surprise that Apple would continue in this homeless direction (and not come back to it).

Still, for those who started out with the iPhone 3G a decade ago, we can’t help but feel nostalgic for the familiar circle.

RIP Home Button, you had a good run. But it’s time to move on.

Read about all the details of Apple’s three new iPhone’s below:

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, this is “the most advanced iPhone we have ever created.”

The iPhone XS is entirely waterproof and liquid proof, with the most durable glass ever on a smartphone.

Philip Schiller, an Apple Worldwide Marketing vice president, introduced it as the “most beautiful phone” they have ever made, and it has the biggest iPhone display to date.

Photos on the new phone will have a 60% greater dynamic range than the iPhone X.

And to make it all more exciting, Apple also introduced the iPhone XS Max.

Besides the wide stereo sound on this new device, the larger screen may excite those looking for a better display.

While the iPhone XS has a 5.8″ super retina display, the XS Max is 6.5″ super retina display.

Face ID is reportedly faster, and both iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be available with up to 512 GB of storage.

The new phones will include a 12MP wide-angle camera, while the front camera is now a 7 MP.

The phones will have all-new sensors and improved true tone flash.

Probably the most impressive change, you can adjust the depth of field of photos after they’ve been taken.

For those who use their phones all day, the new iPhones have the best battery life – and should last 30 minutes longer than the X. The XS Max will last up to one hour longer.

Both phones will have Dual SIM card capability – allowing you to have two phone numbers on one device.

Customers will be able to pre-order iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max beginning Friday, September 14, with availability beginning Friday, September 21. Both models will be available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity models in space gray, silver and a new gold finish starting at $1379 (CAD) and $1,519 (CAD) respectively.

iPhone XR

The iPhone XR has more durable glass, with an LCD display and comes in different colours.

The phone has a new display called a liquid retina display. Think a bigger display in a smaller design at 6.1″, and scrolls “super fast.”

The XR will need to be tapped to wake up, and has Face ID similar with the Xs.

The XR is only a single lens camera system, but has a wide angle like those found on iPhone X.

As for the battery, the iPhone XR has up-to 90 minutes more battery life than the 8 Plus.

The new XR will come in six colours, and three sizes: 64, 128, and 256 GB.

The iPhone XR will be available starting at $1029 CAD and customers will be able to pre-order iPhone XR beginning Friday, October 19 with availability beginning Friday, October 26.
