Following the Harvey Weinstein scandal that rocked Hollywood, and led to the creation of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, a Canadian documentary that explores these topics is set to make its debut soon.

Called The Reckoning: Hollywood’s Worst Kept Secret, the documentary is directed by Montreal-born Barry Avrich and produced by Toronto’s Melissa Hood. The film will have its world premiere as part of Hot Doc’s Special Presentations program at the upcoming 25th anniversary festival in Toronto next month.

The Reckoning: Hollywood’s Worst Kept Secret

The new documentary isn’t the director’s first foray into the tremulous life of Weinstein. In 2010, Avrich wrote, directed and produced Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project, “a documentary about the micro-managing, hair-trigger tempered but ultimately genius Hollywood producer.”

Avrich’s latest endeavour, however, explores the “far darker side of the now-disgraced sexual predator” and includes interviews with insiders, alleged victims, and whistleblowers.

The doc also has interviews with a number of Canadian figures including criminal lawyer Marie Henein who represented former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi in a high-profile sexual assault case.

According to a press release, the doc also will investigate allegations against James Toback, Woody Allen, and Louis C.K.

Hot Docs will be screening The Reckoning: Hollywood’s Worst Kept Secret on April 28 at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema and May 5 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.

This past fall, The New York Times published an investigation on Weinstein’s abusive behaviour. Actresses Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd are among the women who came forward.

Since then, over 30 women have come forward alleging the producer abused and sexually harassed them.

Weinstein has yet to be criminally charged.
