Nov 13 2017, 9:53 pm

A smog warning has been issued for the City of Montreal today.

Environment Canada is warning that “high concentrations of fine particulates are expected and will result in poor air quality.”

Anyone with respiratory ailments or heart disease should avoid any intense physical activity outside while the warning remains in effect.

According to Montreal’s air quality website, “In Quebec, the main culprits [behind smog] are residential wood heating, industrial activity and transportation.”

Today’s forecast is mainly cloudy with a high of 3°C.

Smog Warning

Smog especially affects asthmatic children and people with respiratory ailments or heart disease. It is therefore recommended that these individuals avoid intense physical activity outdoors until the smog warning is lifted.

We can all help improve air quality by doing simple things, such as limiting the use of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, opting to use public transit, reducing our driving speed and not letting our car engines idle unnecessarily.

In Quebec, wood heating is the main source of fine particles that contribute to smog during winter. This activity generates the largest number of these particulates, more than industrial activities and transportation.

Montréal residents – Stop using your wood-burning stove or fireplace until the smog warning has been lifted.
