Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watch for Montreal

Jun 14 2018, 3:44 am

Brace yourselves, Montreal. There are thunderstorms in the forecast, and it’s possibly a big one.

According to Environment Canada, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong gusts of wind, large hail, and heavy rain.

The forecast expects the thunderstorms to develop this evening as a cold front moves through.

The main threat is damaging wind gusts of 20 to 40 km/h slated to hit on Wednesday evening and continue through until Thursday.

“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” says the weather statement.

“Hail and locally heavy rain are also possible. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.”

The thunderstorm is expected to impact the Greater Montreal area, Châteauguay, Longueuil, and Laval.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 20°C on Thursday, with a warm stretch continuing through to the weekend.
