Harvest Creek frozen chicken nuggets recalled due to Salmonella

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall for Harvest Creek brand Chicken Nuggets due to a possible Salmonella contamination.

The frozen chicken was sold in stores in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and possibly nationally.

The CFIA says that consumers who bought this product should throw it out immediately or return to the store where it was purchased.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently conducting an investigation on the product in connection to Salmonella.

Currently, there are 30 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis illness in four provinces: Alberta (2), Ontario (17), Quebec (7), and New Brunswick (4). Four individuals have been hospitalized. They all became sick between May 2017 and February 2018.

Based on the investigation findings to date, exposure to poultry, including frozen raw breaded chicken products has been identified as a source of illness. Several of the ill individuals involved in the outbreak reported eating Harvest Creek Chicken Nuggets before their illness occurred.
