Canada's newest airline looks like it's officially taking flight

Flights are now available though Canada’s newest airline, NewLeaf.

The launch announcement, confirmed by NewLeaf Travel’s CEO Jim Yonge Thursday morning at a press conference in Winnipeg, offers Canadians discounted flights at 25-35% fares below competitors.

Yonge started by squashing any rumours of the death of their company, saying the claims “have been greatly exaggerated.” Earlier this year, the company advised customers that they were suspending bookings due to licensing issues. Yonge said the issues were resolved in March.

NewLeaf is now accepting customer bookings through their website, and flights are set to take off July 25. Introductory prices include one-way flights from Edmonton to Kamloops for $79 including all fees. Other examples of costs are the flights from Winnipeg to Abbotsford for $119. Yonge said the introductory prices are available on all flights between July 25 and October 2.

The Thursday morning announcement also included information about the airline’s carrier, Flair Air. All NewLeaf flights will be operated on Flair Air or Flair’s subcontractor, Enerjet. Yonge also announced that NewLeaf has formed a financial partnership with seven Manitoba First Nations, and that Ben Baldanza, former CEO of Spirit Airlines, has joined the company as Chair of Board of Directors.

NewLeaf Travel is an “ultra-low-cost” airline headquartered in Winnipeg. It offers services between 12 airports, including Abbotsford, Hamilton, Halifax and Edmonton.
