Eastern Canada is about to get hit with 30 cm of snow

While Canadians are getting ready to complain about the summer heat, Newfoundland is bracing itself… because of a snowfall.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning to parts of Newfoundland, which is expecting 15 to 30 cm overnight. And yes, it is May.

The areas under the warning include Grand Falls-Windsor, Bay of Exploits, Bonavista North, Gander and vicinity and Terra Nova.

“Typically with late season snowfalls, accumulations are highly variable from one area to another depending on elevation and proximity to the coast,” states Environment Canada. “As a result, there is potential for amounts to exceed 30 cm over some higher elevations while lower elevations and areas right along the coast could see lower amounts than forecast.”

While parts of the province is expecting snow, St. John’s is also under a weather warning. The capital city won’t be getting hit by snow, but is expecting significant rainfall and strong northerly winds expected tonight into Thursday.

If you remember, this same area was hit with a massive, record-breaking spring snowstorm in 2017.

According to Environment Canada, since March 30 to around April 5 last year, Gander International Airport recorded 134 cm of snow.

More insane still, is that as of April 5, 2017, that snowfall culminated in an all-time record-breaking 230 cm of snow on the ground. At the time, it doubled the previous record for April 5 in the area that was previously set at 114 cm in 2001.

So, no matter what the weather is for you this week, enjoy it.

Unless you’re reading this in Newfoundland.
