City will use rolling ice-crushing machines to clear slippery sidewalks

The City of Montreal is taking action to clear icy sidewalks some new ice-crushing machines.

The City announced yesterday that it will purchase specialized snowmobiles to crush ice off of sidewalks.

These compact machines have large spikey rollers that are used to crush ice off of sidewalks without causing damage to the concrete. Ville-Marie Borough began testing out these machines two years ago for a pilot project.

Projet Montreal’s decision to purchase new machines comes after delayed snow and ice removal from the city. Several residents have fallen on streets due to jammed ice on sidewalks.
