This app could help prevent breast cancer

Breast cancer affects one in eight Canadian women during their lifetime.

That’s why non-profit foundation Keep A Breast has re-launched their Check Yourself! app.

The app helps you to establish your own routine for self-checks. It teaches you the best ways to check your boobies and schedules an automatic monthly reminder at the same time – so there’s no chance of you forgetting.

The team at Keep A Breast Foundation are proud to advocate the self-check, as they so commonly come in contact with young women who have found their own lumps (both benign and malignant) “by accident.”

Knowledge is power

Research shows that around 40% of diagnosed breast cancers are being self-detected, so establishing what is normal for you is an important step in knowing your body. What’s more self-detection can play a huge role in battling breast cancer too.

The Keep A Breast Foundation believes that through a monthly routine of self-checks more people are likely to detect changes in their bodies quickly, will seek medical advice, and potentially detect cancer early.

Knowledge is power, after all.

Get the app

The new app is available in six languages; English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch and Japanese – and is available to download for free on iOS and Android devices via the Apple App Store and Google Play.

What next?

Sure the “selfie” is much maligned, but Keep A Breast is using social media to reclaim it as a way to spread their message of self-checking to young people across the world.

To do that, they have developed the #CHECKYOURSELFIE campaign to ask people to put the selfie to good use. This means self-awareness when it comes to knowing your body and your breasts.

All you have to do is take a photo of yourself placing three fingers to your breast, symbolizing your monthly commitment to self-check. The photo-pledges, accompanied by the caption #CHECKYOURSELFIE – will be posted on social media and fed into Keep A Breast’s educational website.

So what are you waiting for?

Since its inception in 2000, Keep A Breast has worked with young people to remove the shame associated with breasts and breast health.
