A federal byelection date has finally been set for the Burnaby South riding — where NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh plans to run, Daily Hive has learned.

The byelection will be called in early January and will take place in February 2019.

In October, opposition leaders Andrew Scheer, Mario Beaulieu, and Elizabeth May rallied with Singh in a joint letter, calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to announce byelections immediately in the Burnaby-South (BC), York-Simcoe (Ontario), and Outremont (Quebec) ridings.

“While the parties we lead disagree on what solutions are best for the challenges facing Canadians, we are in complete agreement that Canadians deserve to have elected representation as soon as possible,” the letter reads.

“We urge you to do what’s best for Canadians in these ridings and immediately call the byelections for all vacant seats in the House of Commons.”

Singh will now get his chance to win a federal seat in the House of Commons.

Former NDP MP Kennedy Stewart resigned his position in Burnaby-South to run for mayor of Vancouver this year.

Not long afterwards,  Singh announced he would run in the riding to fill the empty seat left by Stewart.

In an interview with Daily Hive, Stewart said he would support Singh and door-knock for the NDP leader.

“I’ll go door-knock for Jagmeet, ” Stewart said. “I really respect him as a person and I campaigned openly about being a New Democrat.”
