BC-based charity receives $25,000 gift

A Coquitlam-based organization saw its 13-year-old SUV break down this fall, leaving them without a ride.

Unique Get Together Society (UTGS), an organization that provides recreational programs, mentorship, and transportation to special-needs kids, was in a tough spot, until Chevrolet stepped in with quite the holiday gift.

A $25,000 cheque was written and presented to UGTS so they could purchase a new vehicle, the donation being the last in a series of gifts given throughout 2017.

“This gift was an incredible surprise,” said Debra Abraham, founder and director of UGTS.

“Our organization’s main objective is to ensure that kids and their families are supported in this community, and this donation will help make daily tasks easier for our entire team, allowing us to help our community even more.”

The donations are Chevrolet’s Gifts of Play, which saw a total of $150,000 donated this year in celebration of Canada 150.

The company, in partnership with ParticipACTION, donated the money towards organizations, schools, and community centres in Canada that get people moving, learning, and (most importantly) playing.

Along with the donation to UGTS, Chevrolet also gave a Gift of Play to six other organizations across Canada, including donations to The God’s Lake Narrows First Nation School’s girls’ basketball team so that their parents could attend a tournament; EcoYolo, a Fort McMurray reforestation project; and to the Gander Boys and Girls club in Newfoundland so they could supply outdoor sporting equipment and toys.

Chevrolet also provided funding for a gardening program and a Tai Chi program for people with Parkinson’s at Veith House in Halifax; new playground equipment for École Quarterway Elementary School in Nanaimo-Ladysmith; and for a new program that helps children from all financial backgrounds attend the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Community Recreation Center in Drummondville, Quebec.

“These donations went to charities or community groups who foster community building and a love for play,” said James Hodge with Chevrolet Canada.

“We believe these are some of the basic tenets of Canadian culture.”

The donations from Chevrolet were given not only aimed at getting Canadians active, but in bringing communities closer together.
