As wildfires burn in the British Columbia interior, the CFL is lending a hand.

At the encouragement of the BC Lions, the league and each of its nine teams have donated a total of $50,000 to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts.

“The BC Lions urged that we respond as one to help our fellow Canadians displaced by these wildfires,” said new CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie in a media release. “I’m pleased to say every team, as well as the league office, quickly agreed to make donations to the Red Cross totalling $50,000.”

Approximately 40,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes, filling evacuation centres in Kamloops and elsewhere.

The Lions are urging fans to text ‘FIRES’ to 30333 to donate $10 to relief efforts.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who will play at BC Place on Friday, have pledged to donate this week’s proceeds from their online 50/50 draw to the Red Cross.
