Canada Post strike will slow down cannabis delivery

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) officially went on strike yesterday, rotating across four cities.

On the heels of legalization, customers who have made online purchases should expect to see delivery delays.

The BC Cannabis Store received over 10,000 orders within the first 48 hours of operation and is “currently monitoring the impacts of a rotating strike at Canada Post, which provides home delivery for customers of our online BC Cannabis Store,” a rep told Daily Hive via email.

“The LDB will continue to work to minimize shipping delays to our valued customers; we hope to see a quick and amicable resolution to this situation and a return to uninterrupted service as soon as possible.”

The strike is currently affecting Toronto today, meaning mail and parcels will not be picked up or delivered for 24 hours.

“We expect regular business to resume once the timeframe has passed. This could mean a slight delay for package delivery for OCS customers in Toronto,” a rep for the Ontario Cannabis Store wrote in an email.

“The OCS recognized the potential of a Canada Post work disruption and has been developing options to put in place alternate processes in the event of prolonged job action.”

Tantalus Labs, a BC-based licensed producer removed Canada Post as an option from its website and will be routing deliveries through Puralotor during the strike.

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, which runs Alberta’s online cannabis service, offers both Canada Post and Purolator as shipping options.

Depending on the length of the strike, it is likely that consumers will experience further cannabis delivery delays.
