Over the Canada Day long weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to former groping allegations that have recently resurfaced in the media, telling reporters he does not remember any “negative interactions” at an event he attended 18 years ago.

Trudeau, who professes himself to be a feminist, and avidly speaks out against sexual harassment, addressed the incident on Sunday in Regina, Saskatchewan, where he was in town to meet with steel workers.

According to various reports, the groping allegations allegedly took place in 2000 at a charity event for the Kokanee Summit Festival to raise funds for the Avalanche Foundation in Creston, BC.

Trudeau was 28 years old at the time.

The Prime Minister said Sunday, “I remember that day in Creston well … I had a good day that day; I don’t remember any negative interactions that day at all”, reports CNN.

Following the charity event, the Creston Valley Advance published an editorial alleging Trudeau had apologized to an unnamed female reporter at the paper after being so forward with her.

The article, which has been circulating online in recent weeks, alleges Trudeau said he wouldn’t have touched the female reporter if he had known she was working for a national newspaper.

Sunday was the first time Trudeau has directly commented on the allegations.
