5 things to do in Montreal today: Thursday, July 27

We’re so close to the weekend! There is plenty happening around town, today. From Bouffons MTL to Montreal Avudu, here are five events to check out this Thursday.

Bouffons MTL!

Located in the Quartier des Spectacles between Jeanne-Mance & St-Laurent, Bouffons MTL! is part of the Just for Laughs festival and also the largest open-air gastronomy village in North America. This year’s honorary guests are Marc-André Jetté and Jessica Harnois. The chef and the sommelier will host a series of meet & greets and other conferences, in addition to serving a special Bouffons MTL! menu. Some of the returning favourites on the program this year are Mandy’s, Jerry mobile from Jérome Ferrer, Maïs, Porchetta while the festival welcomes some newcomers such as Brit & Chips, as well as ice cream & sorbets from crafty dairy bar Les Givrés.

Ali Wong

Ali Wong is a stand-up comic from San Francisco, now living in Los Angeles. Her Netflix stand-up special Baby Cobra was filmed when she was 7 months pregnant and according to the New York Magazine, “The special’s arrival on Netflix is the sort of star-making moment that unites the tastes of the unlikeliest fans.”

The OSM in the Park 

The summer series OSM in the Park presents great works of the classical repertoire inspired by motion pictures. Adam Johnson conducts music from the films 2001: A Space OdysseyApocalypse NowThe King’s SpeechJean de Florette, and Of Gods and Men, with the participation of clarinetist Todd Cope. The Orchestra will also perform popular works originally composed as film soundtracks. Lights, camera, action!

Outdoor Cinema on the Avenue

Each year, L’Avenue Mont-Royal hosts an outdoor cinema during the summer. Held in Parc des Companions, at the corner of Mont-Royal and Cartier, Outdoor Cinema on the Avenue attracts hundreds of Montrealers to each event! Throughout the month of July, a free film screening will take place each week. Scheduled for Thursdays at 9 pm, you won’t want to miss this open-air movie experience. Catch Dalida playing on the big screen tonight.

Montreal Avudo

A dazzling water show paying tribute to the Saint Lawrence River has taken over Old Port. Titled Montreal Avudo, this spectacular water show projects life size images inspired by the city’s history onto the water. The event’s official site promises that “Young and old will be dazzled, moved and transported by the magic of images and scenes projected on rippling water walls and other spectacular installations.” Scenes include archived images, city documents, 3D animations, and relevant illustrations. How does water enter the equation, you may ask? Water jets from 30 fountains create huge 30 x 11.5 meter tall screens of water. The show also includes an 11-storey tall shipping container tower (the largest in the world).
