Doug Ford’s government announced today that it will be delivering on its promise to repeal the 2009 Green Energy Act by introducing new legislation.

In a release, the Ontario government said the Green Energy Act “led to the disastrous feed-in-tariff program and skyrocketing electricity rates for Ontario families and took away powers from municipalities to stop expensive and unneeded energy projects from their communities.”

Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and Monte McNaughton, Minister of Infrastructure, said that the government has introduced legislation, that if passed, will completely put an end to the Green Energy Act.

This will include repealing provisions that stripped power from municipalities to stop the advancement of wind and solar farms.

The legislation will also give the provincial government the authority to stop approvals to energy project it deems unnecessary.

“The Green Energy Act allowed the previous government to trample over the rights of families, businesses and municipalities across rural Ontario,” said Minister McNaughton in a release. “But we believe the people of Ontario should have the final say about what gets built in their communities.”
