Environment Canada issues weekend heat warning for Metro Vancouver

Environment Canada has issued a special weekend weather statement for Metro Vancouver due to rising temperatures.

The heat warning applies to the following areas:

  • City of Vancouver – including Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver – northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver – southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver – southwest including Richmond and Delta
  • North Shore – including West Vancouver and North Vancouver

According toĀ Environment Canada, not only will the next few days be filled with sun, but temperatures are expected to reach over 30Ā°C inland.

Environment and Climate Change Canada and Medical Health Officers are reminding Metro Vancouver residents to take the following precautionsĀ in the heat:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking cold beverages (preferably water) irrespective of your activity intake. Don’t wait until you are thirsty.
  • Keep cool
    • Spending time in an air-conditioned facility (such as a shopping centre, library, community centre or restaurant) for at least several hours every day.

    • Avoid sunburn, stay in the shade or use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more.
    • NEVER leave children or pets alone in a parked car.
  • Check in on others:Ā 
    • People living alone are at high risk of severe heat-related illness. Check regularly on older people, those who are unable to leave their homes, and anyone who may not be spending at least several hours every day in air-conditioned places for signs of heat-related illness.
