City of Calgary proposing ban on cannabis use in public

A City of Calgary report is proposing a bylaw to ban the use of cannabis in public places.

According to the report, the province indicated that municipalities may create additional restrictions on public consumption, and Calgary is doing just that.

“Administration is recommending creating a new bylaw for public cannabis consumption, beyond the provincial restrictions, which would prohibit consuming cannabis in public places,” states the report. “This new bylaw would restrict all forms of cannabis consumption in public places or in areas where the public has consent to access.”

The bylaw would be enforced by municipal police, along with the Calgary Police Service.

Exemptions would be given to those with medical documents for cannabis use.

Another exemption for the proposed Cannabis Consumption Bylaw includes public consumption at events.
Like “beer gardens” the municipal government would require that any space set aside for cannabis consumption be separate from both ‘beer gardens’ as well as designated tobacco smoking areas.

“Cannabis gardens” would require consumers to bring their own marijuana to the events, and organizers would have to apply for permits through the City.

The report will head to the Community and Protective Services committee on April 3.
