Recreational cannabis may be legal, but it’s not that legal.

The Calgary Police Service busted an illegal grow-op that contained more than 1,100 cannabis plants at a residence in northeast Calgary.

The plants were valued at more than $1.38 million, according to a release from the Calgary Police Service. The Bedfield Court NE grow-op also contained more than $20,000 in equipment.

Alterations to the home’s electrical, HVAC, and plumbing had been made to accommodate the budding enterprise, which caused Alberta Health Services and the City of Calgary to deem the building uninhabitable.

“Large-scale grow-ops like this pose an immense risk to the health and welfare of the occupants and neighbours,” said Staff Sgt. Kyle Grant, of the CPS Strategic Enforcement Unit, in the release.

“Homes that have alterations made to their electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems pose an extreme fire hazard and we’ve seen the deadly consequences in our city before.”

No one was found at the residence when police arrived with a warrant, though the release stated that investigation will continue.

Albertans are allowed to grow up to four cannabis plants per household, meaning that whoever was tending the harvest at this grow-op had more than 250x the legal maximum.
