VPD are reminding people that large crowds gathered at Sunset Beach for 420 Vancouver celebrations today are expected to have an impact on traffic flow in the area.

“Police are anticipating large crowds to gather at Sunset Beach that will likely cause traffic disruptions on Beach Avenue between Pacific and Thurlow streets,” said the VPD in a release.

Beach Avenue will be closed to eastbound traffic and only local westbound vehicles will be permitted in the area, until 10 pm tonight.

Parking restrictions will remain in place until midnight.

Police said an additional gathering is expected near the Vancouver Art Gallery, with potential traffic disruptions on surrounding streets.

However, “officers are on-scene to ensure that the traffic disruptions are minimal.”

The VPD said officers will also be looking for drivers who are impaired by drugs or alcohol.

“Drivers can expect to see drug recognition experts and officers equipped with alcohol screening devices throughout the day,” they added.

Last year, tens of thousands of people congregated around Sunset Beach for the annual 420 smoke out, which was the largest gathering of its kind in Canada.

The event is scheduled to continue until 8 pm tonight.
