Winter camping in Alberta looks super awesome, but crazy cold (PHOTOS)

It takes a certain type of effort to hike yourself up a mountain, lugging along all the necessary clothes, foot, tent, and equipment necessary for setting up a temporary camp.

And that’s on a sunny summer’s day.

It takes even more dedication to do the same thing in the dead of winter, with snowshoes strapped to your feet and deep snows dogging your every step.

Yet some people still prevail – and the photos they take are marvellous to see… especially to those of us sitting in the lazy warmth of our beds at home.

We can’t say we blame them for chasing adventure during Alberta’s notoriously chilly winters, even if there’s no way in the freezing ninth circle of hell that we’d be joining them.

Though if you’re going to go winter camping, it looks like Alberta’s Rocky Mountains are the place to do it.

Here are some shots of Alberta’s alpine adventurers, in all their glory.

For your own safety, please make sure you are prepared before heading out on your next adventure. Information on how to prepare for your trip and stay safe while on your hike is available from AdventureSmart and Alberta Parks.
