Due to West Eau Claire Park’s popularity and overcrowding, the City of Calgary and 02 Planning + Design Inc are working on a plan to redevelop the area. Together, their vision is to “create the most visited and valued open space in Calgary: the natural heart of the city where culture and nature intermingle,” reads the Public Realm Plan.
Based on the site’s unique landscape features and ideas generated during public consultation, the following 10 spaces were designed:
For the east end of West Eau Claire Park, concepts reveal a separation from Eau Claire Plaza to the connection with the 7th Street SW Cycle track.
Bike Calgary believes that this planned separation will be both safer and a more pleasurable experience. Unfortunately, the separation cannot continue throughout the whole way as the Helipad must be maintained.
As for the west end of West Eau Claire Park, continued access to and from the area will be maintained. Currently, the plans for the west end hold a strong commitment to creating a space where people can travel effectively while enjoying their ride.
Planned gardens, board walks along the lagoon, and more are coming to Calgary’s West Eau Claire park.
The Park will be getting a luminescent pathway too, the concept is similar to other luminescent pathways found elsewhere in the world, including the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Bicycle Path in Nuenen, Netherlands.
Although only concepts today, these may become reality in the coming years and hold great potential for meeting Calgary’s future needs.
