Whether you are all about the veggies all the time, or just looking to cut meat out of your diet now and then, there are a few key spots worth checking out in the city.
Here are five vegan and vegetarian restaurants to try in Calgary.
The newest addition to Calgary’s growing veggie scene is Veg-In YYC in downtown. With an aim to bring the city another high-quality vegetarian dining option, Veg-In has a menu of healthy, affordable meatless eats, including wraps, burgers, and sandwiches, as well as beverages. There’s a little Indian flair in the menu, too–look for flavourful bites like a wrap with masala-spiced chickpeas, or a cooling lassi to sip on.
Address: Rocky Mountain Court – 215 6th Avenue SE
Calgary’s The Coup is well-loved for their “ethical vegetarian” fare, using food and other goods from thoughtfully-sourced local suppliers to keep their footprint low. Offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks, The Coup has playful dishes that don’t leave meat-eaters feeling like they didn’t get their fill, or that they don’t belong. Try their riff on the trendy Hawaiian poke made with melon instead of fish, their Falafel Quesadilla, or any of their takes on comfort eats like noodles, banh mi sandwiches, or burgers.
Address: 924 17th Avenue SW
Using their house-made GMO-free tofu, Tamarind is handily one of YYC’s favourite spots for vegan and veggie eats with Vietnamese flavours. Warm up with a rich Laksa, or cool down with a mango or green papaya salad.
Address: 106 – 1111 6th Avenue SW
Hearts Choices is a Thai vegan cafe with a menu that includes an abundance of tasty choices, available mix-and-match and combo platter style. Don’t miss their vegan Pad Thai, which is a favourite with fans.
Address: The Brick Plaza, 9679 Macleod Trail SW
The Himalayan isn’t a strictly veg restaurant, but they do have several meat-free options for diners. Try their Vegetable Mo-Mo (similar to a dumpling), or any of their veggie mains, like the Jomson Vegetable or Himalayan Eggplant. At lunctime, The Himalayan offers a popular buffet option.
Address: 3218 17th Avenue SW
This popular Chinese restaurant was previously meat-free, but they have added meat to their menu. Still, Buddha’s Veggie offers an extensive menu of options for veg-only eaters, including rice, noodle, meat substitute, and tofu dishes.
Address: 5802 Macleod Trail SW
