If you think that solar power is centuries away from becoming the main stream, think again. With the introduction of the powerwall home battery, Tesla just made living off the grid a whole lot easier.

The average home uses more power during the morning and evening and that is exactly when the power wall shines. Basic solar panels are great but they are rather useless during the night when you actually need to use the power. So how can you use solar power in the night? Well simply by storing it when it’s available using a battery, similarly filling your water bottle in the morning will guarantee easy access to water throughout the day.

The powerwall is a battery that does exactly that. It charges using electricity generated from solar panels during the day and discharges when the sun is down and when power is needed. It can also be used as a tool against power outages by providing back up power. With the powerwall you can even live completely off the grid.

Not only is the power wall great at storing solar energy it also looks nice. Tesla put a lot of thought into how this battery looks and it turned out to be more of an art piece that can go on any wall in the house. The powerwall comes in 10 kWh weekly cycle and 7 kWh daily cycle models both of which are guaranteed to last ten years. If that’s not enough power you can always get multiple batteries and install them together creating up to 90kWh of energy.

Tesla hopes to one day see the entire planet using solar power and the powerwall is a great first step towards that direction. This and the Gigafactory of course.
