Justin Trudeau announces cabinet shuffle

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made changes to his cabinet on Tuesday, ahead of Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration.

Trudeau announced the following change to the Ministry:

Chrystia Freeland, the current Minister of International Trade, will become the Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Stéphane Dion. Freeland will retain the Canada-US relations file, including trade relations;
Maryam Monsef, currently Minister of Democratic Institutions, becomes Minister of Status of Women;
Patricia A. Hajdu, currently Minister of Status of Women, becomes Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour;
François-Philippe Champagne, currently Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, becomes Minister of International Trade;
Karina Gould, currently Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, becomes Minister of Democratic Institutions;
Ahmed D. Hussen becomes Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

Longtime Liberal Stéphane Dion will be leaving cabinet, and is expected to take an ambassador position.

“I, and all Canadians, owe (Stéphane Dion) him a deep debt of gratitude for his service. I know I will be able to continue to count on his wisdom and his tireless service, and look forward to the next chapter of Mr. Dion’s contributions to our country,” said Trudeau in a statement.

John McCallum, the former immigration minister, will move on to serve as Canada’s Ambassador to China.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be proposing the Honourable John McCallum to the Chinese government as Canada’s Ambassador to China. The Canada-China relationship will be well served by such a strong presence from our government,” said Trudeau.

MaryAnn Mihychuk, former minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, will continue to serve as MP for the Kildonan—St. Paul riding in Winnipeg.
