8 ways wanderlusters plan to make their travels count in 2019

Booking.com has released the top travel trends for 2019. To sum it up, the world is more our oyster than ever before.

Trends show that Canadian travellers are looking for socially conscious options, experiences over possessions, and the “less is more” travel approach. In an age where the world is at our fingertips thanks to advancements in technology, tourism, transportation, and content, we are looking to enrich our travel experiences in more ways than have been possible in the past.

“2019 is set to be an exciting year for travel. With technological advancements, a more connected world and a continuously growing consumer appetite for the best travel experiences, we’re poised for groundbreaking developments, taking travel to unexplored heights,” Pepijn Rijvers, Chief Marketing Officer at Booking.com comments.

Here are eight key areas that show where travel is headed in 2019.

The Appren-trip

2019 will see travellers focusing more on adding purpose to their trips. 47% of Canadian travellers agree travelling has taught them invaluable life skills, and this type of education and enlightenment will add to the attractiveness of potential employees beyond just classroom or office experience.

Easy does it

Tech innovations such as real-time luggage tracking, room-key access with your phone, and more comprehensive booking apps will allow greater ease of travel.

Watch this space – uncharted territories

NASA will start construction of its Lunar Space Station in 2019, and with investments in orbital spaceflights we may be heading into a time where our globetrotting isn’t just limited to our own globe.

Travellers are more and more interested in exploring uncharted territory – in particular, 63% of travellers have expressed a desire to stay in accommodation under the sea.

Up close and personal

Travel content is becoming richer and more personal than ever, and in 2019 looks to unlock even more customized travel information that will reach us exactly when we need it most.

Conscious travel

Social, political and environmental factors are increasingly having an influence on the way that people travel. 38% of Canadian travellers feel social issues are of real importance when considering a travel destination, and the study found that 50% choose not to go to a destination if they feel it will negatively impact the people who live there (we should hope not!).

Plastic not-so-fantastic

Accommodation providers and tourism promoters will look to further reduce their plastic usage and increase their sustainable credentials, in an effort to attract the conscious traveller mentioned above. A whopping 78% of travellers say they would be willing to spend some time on activities that offset the environmental impact of their stay.

The experience curator

More than half of travellers (52%) value experiences over material possessions. It’s not enough to just “go” to a destination; it’s what you’re going to “do” there that will provide a truly enriching experience.

Fun fact: 31% of travellers plan to visit the destination that makes them feel like a kid again. Can we go too, Mom?

Maximizing the micro

38% of Canadian travellers plan to take more weekend trips in 2019. It’s a year where less is more and when it comes to travel, we will live it up no matter how much time we have! #TheAgeOfYOLO
