Globalfest 2017 is here and that means hanging out at Elliston Park while you take in the light show.

The event, which runs from August 15 to 26, will include several pyromusical shows, as well as live performances, cultural pavilions, ethnic food booths, and a night market. Elliston Park is open from  6 to 11:30 pm on festival days with entrance closing at 9:15pm.

To help you get the most of your night, here a few tips from veteran Globalfesters.

Take bug repellent

This would have to be the number one thing you must bring with you to GlobalFest. Elliston Park is beautiful and the fireworks are amazing, but it’s home to a large pool of water that mosquitoes love. On top of the still water, the bugs love the wet ground, so be sure to coat yourself with some spray or bring a citronella candle with you.

Bring something to sit on

Some people prefer taking lawn chairs, but they’re a hassle to carry and you might be blocking someones view behind you. Take some beach towels or tarps and lay down under the stars.

Layers or blankets

It gets cold once the sun sets in Calgary so bringing some extra layers with you is a great idea. Blankets are perfect for you to snuggle up to that special someone, or wrap yourself up into a burrito.

Get there early

Not saying you have to be there right when gates open, but it’s a good idea to get there at least 45 minutes before the fireworks start. If you get there 1.5 hours before, it’ll give you time to walk to the grounds, set up your sitting area and check out some booths before the show.

Put away your phone

Although we all like to post on social media, limit your screen time. You obviously need to take a few pics but don’t be glued to your screen. Enjoy the show live!

Enjoy the food

There are lots of food trucks on scene but there is also an array of food you can find in the International Pavilion. If you’re slightly strapped on cash, you can even bring in your own snacks and have a picnic with the show.

Parking

Parking is a bi*ch… we’re serious. But if you don’t mind the hike down 17th Ave SE it’s not too bad. If you aren’t into that walking life, you can also catch a shuttle from Marlborough LTR station or City Centre Parkade. First shuttle leaves at 5:30pm.

Entrance into the Park

There are three entrances to Elliston Park – two entrances off of 17 Avenue (International Avenue) SE and one along 60 Street SE. Gates open at 6 pm every night and you won’t be let in after 9:15pm.
