The Art of Leadership comes to Calgary September 11, bringing with it some of the most influential and innovative leaders in the world. In the constantly shifting and changing world of leadership, these are the people digging down into what makes an effective team, organization, and personality, and coming back up with new and exciting ideas.
Few people know the sacrifice and bravery needed to be a good leader more than Captain Richard Phillips.
In 2009, Captain Phillips was captured by Somali pirates after the ship he was in command of – the Maersk Alabama – was attacked and held hostage, while delivering food aid to East Africa. To protect the lives of his crew, Captain Phillips offered himself to the pirates as a captive, and was taken aboard one of the ship’s covered lifeboats.
After the crew of the Maersk Alabama made a deal to trade a pirate they had captured for Captain Phillips, the pirates refused to honour their deal, and fled with the captain. The U.S. Navy responded, and negotiations began between the pirates and the captain of the U.S.S Bainbridge. Seizing an opportunity, Captain Phillips leaped from the lifeboat where was captive and attempted to swim to the Bainbridge. He was recaptured by the pirates, but on April 12 a Marine sniper concluded Captain Phillips was in “imminent danger”, shooting and killing one of the pirates, and beginning the Navy S.E.A.L.-lead rescue.
Captain Phillips is the author of his best-selling memoir “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirate, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea”, as well as the real-life inspiration for the Academy Awarded nominated film Captain Phillips.
