The body was that of 25-year-old Darby Shade. Shade was stabbed to death, as confirmed by an autopsy.
Police also found a party being held across the street from where the body was discovered, and believe that an altercation led to the use of pepper spray earlier in the night.
A week later, police had issued second-degree murder warrants for two men: 25-year-old Christian Whitebear and 19-year-old Matthew Crane-Watchmaker.
On January 30, Wetaskiwin RCMP officers arrested Crane-Watchmaker, and he was transported back to Calgary.
Westaskiwin is located 250 kilometres north of Calgary, sitting between Red Deer and Edmonton.
Police are still seeking Whitebear, who is described in the release as “Indigenous, approximately 5’11” tall and 190 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.”
