13 Remembrance Day ceremonies in Calgary 2016

As millions of Canadians across the country pay their respects to military service members past and present, here are all the ways Calgary residents can say their peace on Friday, November 11.

Field of Crosses

  • What: The annual Field of Crosses is back. Take time out of your day to walk through the 3,000 crosses that were set-up by volunteers, to pay tribute for those fallen from our province and for our country. Everyday at sunrise there are flag raising ceremonies and at sunset flags are lowered. A special Rememberance Day ceremony will be held on November 11.
  • Where: Memorial Drive between 3rd Street NW and Centre Street
  • When: November 1 to 11
  • Ceremony Time: November 11 at 10:30am
  • Road Closure: Westbound Memorial Drive at 4th Street NW, Northbound Centre Street Bridge from 10:30am to noon on Friday, November 11

Aerospace Museum Ceremony

  • What: The Aerospace Museum of Calgary is holding an outdoor Remembrance Day ceremony on the old BCATP parade square. Arrive early to get a parking spot. We’re hoping to have the ceremony outside this year on the old BCATP parade square, but this will depend on the weather. If the ceremony does need to move inside, space will be limited so try and arrive as early as you can.
  • Where: Aerospace Museum – 4629 McCall Way NE
  • When: Friday, November 11 from 10:20 to 11:15 am
  • Ceremony Time: 10:25am

Burnsland Cemetery

  • What: Many heroes representing the Canadian Military and Royal Canadian Mounted Police have been laid to rest at the Burnsland Cemetery. Head there for a free walking tour at 2 pm to explore the history and stories behind some of the non-Canadian units whose members are buried in the Burnsland Field of Honour.
  • Where: 27th Avenue and Spiller Road SE
  • When: Friday, November 11

Battalion Park

  • What: Hosted by the Kings Own Calgary Regiment, the 5th annual 5th Annual Battalion Park Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held on November 11th. There will speeches, a public address, wreath laying, and a short ceremony.
  • Where: 3001 Signal Hill Drive SW
  • When: Friday, November 11
  • Ceremony Time: 10:30am

Canadian Pacific Ogden Memorial

  • What: Everyone is invited to attend the CP’s annual Remembrance Day ceremony at the Ogden Memorial. The location for the ceremony will be at CP’s Memorial Square, which was built in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.
  • Where: CP Memorial Square – adjacent to the top parking lot by the 69th Avenue SE and Ogden Dale Road SE entrance.
  • When: Friday, November 11

Remembrance Day Parade at Central Memorial Park

  • What: The Calgary Highlanders will have a Military parade using 4th Street SW between 12th and 13th Avenue SW. It will be held at the Memorial Park area around the Cenotaph.
  • Where: Central Memorial Park – 1221 2nd Street SW
  • When: Friday, November 11
  • Time: 10:30am to 12:30pm

Calgary International Airport Ceremony

  • What: There will be a Remembrance Day ceremony at YYC Calgary International Airport for those who wish to pause and remember those who have served in past conflicts, and honour the men and women who serve our country today. The Calgary International Airport Pipe Band and Honour Guard will form up at 10:30 am in the Concourse A – Departures Level check-in area at YYC. There will be a procession through the terminal ending at the open public area adjacent to Montana’s Cookhouse.
  • Where: YYC Calgary International Airport – 2000 Airport Road NE
  • When: Friday, November 11 at 10:30
  • Time: Moment of silence at 11am

Chinook Centre

  • What: At Chinook Mall’s centre court, 5 Buglers will be playing the “Last Post”. A moment of silence will be observed by CF Chinook Centre immediately following the “Last Post”
  • Where: 6455 Macleod Trail SW
  • When: Friday, November 11
  • Ceremony Time: 11am

Fort Calgary

  • What: Fort Calgary is hosting a Remembrance Day service and then an artisan’s fair to follow. The service will take place at 10:30am and the fair will run from 11:30am to 5pm. Admission to the fair is free if you bring along a non-perishable food item for the Veteran’s Food Bank.
  • Where: 750 9th Avenue SE
  • When: Friday, November 11
  • Ceremony Time: 10:30am

Jubilee Auditorium Remembrance Day Service

  • What: Get to the Jube early on Friday for their annual free Remembrance Day ceremony, as seating is assigned and tickets are issued on a first-come, first-served basis on the day. This ceremony includes the laying of wreaths by political, veterans, military, civic and community organizations.
  • Where: 1415 14th Avenue NW
  • When: Friday, November 11
  • Ceremony Time: 10:30 to 11:45 am

Kensington Canadian Legion

  • What: This event is open to Legion members and guests, and all veterans. Doors will be open at 9:30am on November 11 and the ceremony will start at 10:45am. A lunch will be held after the ceremony at noon.
  • Where: 1910 Kensington Road NW
  • When: Friday, November 11
  • Ceremony Time: 10:45am

Military Museums

  • What: The Military Museums will hold their annual Remembrance Day service and offer free admission to the museum to follow. If you’re planning on attending we suggest getting there early, as this is one of Calgary’s largest ceremonies. Bring a non-perishable food with you to the museums to donate to the Veterans’ Food Bank.
  • Where: 4520 Crowchild Trail SW
  • When: Friday, November 11
  • Ceremony Time: Starts at 10:30am

Kerby Centre

  • What: The Kerby Centre’s Remembrance Day Ceremony will be held in the Kerby Centre gym with doors opening at 10:30am. Music will be provided by Johnny Summers and there will be refreshments to follow.
  • Where: 1133 7th Avenue SW
  • When: Friday, November 11 at 10:30
  • Ceremony Time: Starts at 10:50am
