Working in the cannabis industry may not have been an aspiration for many folks prior to legalization, but now the job market is budding with opportunities.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), which offers a variety of cannabis-related courses, recently partnered with Cannabis at Work to offer training for Canadian cannabis retail staff.

“We’re pleased to be partnering with Cannabis At Work to deliver this workshop,” David Purcell, Director, Emerging Business at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, said in a press release.

“KPU has led the way in developing curriculum to train the professionals needed by the rapidly expanding cannabis industry in Canada. This partnership is another great opportunity to help people learn the skills they need to work within the upcoming recreational retail cannabis market.”

Cannabis at Work, which provides recruitment services, online industry training, and workplace impairment training, will be the only partner authorized to deliver this training in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

The Retail Cannabis Consultant workshop will teach students about the federal and provincial regulatory frameworks, the history of prohibition and legalization in Canada, an understanding of the cannabis plant and its effects, and the overarching role and responsibilities of a Retail Cannabis Consultant.

“As retailers prepare to launch stores across various Canadian provinces, it’s imperative that
their staff be equipped with the necessary skills to ensure for a safe and positive experience that is also compliant with regulatory frameworks,” said Alison McMahon, CEO and Founder of Cannabis At Work.

“The Retail Cannabis Consultant workshop provides staff with a foundational skill set that can helps ensure a good experience for cannabis consumers.”

The first workshop will take place in Edmonton on October 16, with dates for Calgary and Saskatoon to follow.
