Free admission to provincial parks and city facilities on Family Day

Family day long weekend is almost here, and as such the provincial and municipal governments have announced that a few parks, museums and municipal facilities will be providing free entrance to celebrate.

Free family fun in Calgary area

Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology – Drumheller

Special Family Day programming will be available at the Royal Tyrrell Museum all weekend long. Free admission will apply on Family Day. Storytime is perfect for the little ones. Fossil casting allows visitors to make a piece of pre-history to take home. On Family Day, kids can transform themselves into a dinosaur by making their own dinosaur hat. Free auditorium shows also run throughout the weekend. A small fee will apply to the fossil casting program.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump – near Fort Macleod

Celebrate the “Full Moon of the Eagle” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day includes live Alberta birds of prey, a simulated archaeological dig, guided building tours, “Living off the Land” artifact demonstrations and storytelling. You can even become a buffalo runner, by participating in in a hunt re-enactment.

GLOW Downtown Winter Lights Festival

21 artists will be strutting their stuff this month across 12 outdoor sites in downtown Calgary. The GLOW Downtown Winter Lights Festival will feature local, national and international artists and is a free event that is guaranteed to be a great time. Public spaces throughout the downtown core will be lit with one-of- a-kind installations, projections, theatrical experiences and interactive light art. February 17 to 20 from 6:30 to 11pm.

Fort Calgary WinterFest

Museums, local history, horse-drawn carriage rides, snacks and musical performances – what more could you want? Celebrating the history of Calgary at Fort Calgary is a great reminder of how lucky we all are to be Canadian, and everyone should get to experience that! February 20 from 10 am to 4 pm.

Fish-tival at Bow Habitat Station

If you’re eager to pick up some new fishing tips and tricks, head over to the Bow Habitat Station for their yearly “fish-rival” event. You can feed the fish while expanding your fishy knowledge for $5, and, the best part, you can end the day by roasting some marshmallows over the fire – perfect! February 18 from 10am to 4pm.

Swimming

On February 20 there will be free public swimming at select City pools from 1 to 2:30 pm and 3 to 4:30 pm

Skating

The following arenas will have free skating from 1 – 2:30 pm on February 20
