7 events happening in Calgary over the long weekend

It might be temping to shut the blinds, throw on some Netflix, and let the long weekend pass you by in a blur of delivery service and naps, but summer’s almost over and regret is a frigid feeling to have throughout the winter.

If ever there was a day to seize, it’s the extra one this Labour Day long weekend.

Fiesta Filipino

This three day event showcases the rich culture of the Philippines. Eat some great food, watch some entertaining dancers, and perhaps even try your hand at the singing competition—if you’re brave enough, that is.

When: Friday, September 1 to Sunday, September 3
Time: Noon to 9 pm on Friday, 10 am to 9 pm on Saturday, and 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday

Celebrate Calgary Pride

The city will be decked out in rainbow colours this weekend, with a crazy amount of Pride events taking place throughout the three days. Check out the Pride Parade on Sunday afternoon, Marda Pride on Saturday, or Pride in the Park throughout the day on Sunday.

Rotary/Mattamy Greenway 150 Family Shindig

To celebrate Canada 150 and the new Rotary/Mattamy Greenway, the City of Calgary is offering a free BBQ lunch at four different parks along the greenway. There will also be live music, speeches, and activities for kids.

When: Saturday, September 2

SE: Mahogany Park, intersection of Mahogany Boulevard and Marquis Green

The Roadblock Party

17th Avenue is going to be packed on Sunday—even without any cars on the road. Pop-up markets will be lining the street and restaurants will be offering special deals, making this the perfect place to be if you feel like grabbing a pint or two.

Calgary Highland Games

Calgary will host a sliver of Scotland for the Calgary Highland Games this Saturday. Watch elegant dancers perform and strong men hurl stones further than you’d ever thought possible.

Celebration on the Hill

To celebrate Canada 150, the SCA Community Association is throwing an event that will include an art show, a LEGO competition, a free pancake breakfast, and a BBQ lunch.

BBQ on the Bow

With live music, food trucks, and a BBQ competition, BBQ on the Bow is a solid place to spend your long weekend. Make sure you arrive hungry; there will be BBQ food trucks and beer gardens throughout the two day event.
