A new year is upon us, and with it comes new music and new concert announcements.
Welcome to our monthly concert listing! As each month goes by, we expect this list to grow larger, especially with spring and summer concert seasons. Check back at the beginning of each month to see our top concerts, and we’ll see you in the crowd!
For January, bundle up and check out one of these five concerts in Calgary featuring mostly Canadian lineups and covering almost all music genres.
Montreal’s own Rufus Wainwright returns to Calgary this month for a special concert with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. The two-time Juno Award winner, and one of Elton John’s favourite musicians, only has a handful of scheduled tour dates for 2016, with Calgary being one of the first. Wainwright released the double album “Prima Donna” in the fall of 2015, which followed the success of his initial opera with the same name. After performing “Prima Donna: A Symphonic Visual Concert” in Europe, he’s bringing this one of a kind show home this year.
It’s a bass take-over at Flames Central this month. DJ/Producer Excision returns with his unmistakable bass-heavy show that is sure to send the crowd into a frenzy. One of EDM’s festival favourites, and hailing from Kelowna, B.C., Excision is touring with other faves Bear Grillz and Calgary’s own XL. Expect to dance until the morning hours while experiencing the sounds of Excision. Also on the bill are Slim Pickins, OpenEnd, and more.
Australian heartthrob Vance Joy is back on his own headlining tour after opening for one Taylor Swift most of 2015. You may not recognize his name, but you’ve probably heard his number one hit “Riptide” over and over. The indie pop singer-songwriter’s debut album “Dream Your Life Away” was released in 2014, but Vance Joy is still selling out his venues globally and locally. Although Ticketmaster is officially sold out for The Fire and The Flood tour date in Calgary, some tickets are available on resale.
Legendary Canadian country rockers Blue Rodeo are making their way across Canada in early 2016, and the 25-day coast-to-coast tour includes two shows in Calgary. In the fall of 2015, the band released their latest album Live At Massey Hall, which was recorded during their 2014 tour of the album “In Our Nature.” Formed in 1984 and with 14 studio albums, Blue Rodeo remains one of Canada’s original rock groups. Check out these legends at one of their two scheduled dates in the city.
One of Canada’s current “it” bands, the Arkells, are back on tour. After winning two Juno awards in 2015, these boys are destined for more awards, on a larger scale. Known for their electric live shows, the Arkells often sell out shows months in advance. After the 2014 release of their critically acclaimed album “High Noon,” these guys have barely taken a break from doing what they do best: touring. If you haven’t seen them live yet and you have tickets for one of the shows, you’re in for a treat. If not, make sure to grab tickets next time they roll into town.
