Heads up: Calgary will be getting an indoor beach this September

A new beach is coming to Calgary, and we don’t mean on the Bow River.

The Beach YYC, an indoor beach facility that is set to open this September, will provide a warm, sandy place to hang out during Calgary’s infamously cold winters (and springs, and autumns).

The beach will be home to volleyball, soccer, and ultimate games, though will also be a place for anyone looking to simply warm their toes in the sand.

A licensed cafe will be opened in the building for anyone hoping to cool off after an intense game, and showers are on hand to make sure that you’re not heading home all sandy.

“We wanted to create a new place that could offer a little bit of the summer, all year,” The Beach YYC’s website reads.

“Somewhere to kick off your shoes and dig your feet in the sand, and then pick a sport and play that in the sand as well.”

Once complete, the venue will house over 800 tonnes of sand and span a full 13,000 sq. ft. The sand will be 1 to 1.5 feet deep, and perfect for the five full-sized volleyball courts planned to take up much of the space.

There will even be some picnic tables for potential spectators to watch their friends play.

The venue will be organizing different varieties of volleyball leagues and currently has a mix of Rec Mix 6s, Intermediate Mix 4s, and Competetive Mix 4s planned.

Drop-in nights, youth leagues, and monthly member cards are also in the works.

The more competitive volleyball players can get an idea of The Beach YYC’s league schedule on Dash Platform.

We’ll see you at the beach!
