Guide to Calgary farmers’ markets this fall

There are a bounty of farmers’ markets dotted around Calgary, offering visitors locally-grown fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry from local suppliers, artisan cheese, and breads. While some farmers’ markets choose to close up shop for the fall and winter months, a bunch still continue to operate no matter how low the temperature drops.

With seasonal produce, farm-fresh finds, and prepared foods; here is our guide to Calgary’s farmers’ markets this fall.

Calgary Farmers’ Market

Located just off Blackfoot Trail and Heritage Drive, The Calgary Farmer’s Market is a premier destination for farm-fresh foods and seasonal finds. The market is home to over 80 vendors and continues year after year to supply market-goers with local produce, meat, poultry, international foods, organic goods, art, crafts and more.

Crossroads Market

This popular year-round market is not only home to a flea and antique market, it also boasts an indoor farmers’ market, which is filled with a variety of stalls overflowing with all manner of food. Market-goers should expect a range of fresh produce, meat, poultry, international cuisine, and pre-packaged foods.

Hillhurst Sunnyside Farmers’ Market

Fill your basket with quality, flavourful foods and goods produced by local farmers, food creators and artisans at this community driven farmers’ market. As an Alberta Approved Market, Hillhurst Sunnyside Farmers’ Market is committed to ensuring that at least 80% of their vendors sell products which they, a family member, a staff member or a member of a producer-owned cooperative; have made, baked or grown.

When: Outdoor season runs every Wednesday from May 20 to October 7. The Market moves indoors on October 28 and operates every first and third Wednesday until May 4, 2016.

The Market on Macleod

The Market of Macleod offers farmers’ market produce (organic meat, dairy products, fruit and vege) from around Alberta, which can be bought straight from the supplier. In addition to featuring locally-sourced foods, The Market on Macleod is also home to a range of vendors who whip up made-to-order snacks and meals.

Symons Valley Ranch

This northwest rustic farmers’ market is a great spot to drop by if you’re wanting to pick up affordable, fresh fruit and veg. Not only does the market carry an excellent range of organic produce, but it also features an assortment of prepared food items, baked treats, chocolate, olive oil, condiments, and a whole lot more.

DJ Market: From Seed to Table

Open until the end of November, family owned DJ Market (established in 1991) offers customers a wide range of seasonal produce. With an intimate and integrated approach to growing food, DJ Market strives to maintain strong personal relationships with their farmers, with some relationships spanning over 20 years. Most of the vegetables that the market carries are produced either in Alberta or British Columbia. Before setting out to the market you can go online and see what’s currently available.

Marda Loop Farmers’ Market

There’s only one more Saturday left to check out the goods on offer at Marda Loops Farmers’ Market. Stock up on locally-source foods, harvest veggies and handcrafted goods, while enjoying made-to-order dishes. Participating vendors include Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters, The Cucumber Man, Angela’s Olives, The Mighty Skillet, and more.
